Is There a Fire in Your Kitchen?

I got home from work and literally just crashed into a comfy spot on the couch and watched HGTV.  I seem to really be into the housing shows – Income Property, Love It or List It, etc.  The before / afters are just amazing and they never fail to suck me in.

Dinner last night was tilapia.  Unfortunately, I chose a pan that was just too small which made it hard to flip the fish over… causing it to break into pieces and stick to the pan.  I wasn’t too far into the cooking when the smoke alarms started going off.  Of course, I opened the back door to let air in to help with the smoke alarms and doing that set off the burglar alarm as I hadn’t realized that Adam set the alarm when he got home.  So, while he raced to turn off the alarm the security monitoring company called.  We literally had a smoke detector, security alarm, and phone ringing all at once.  Definitely not a great cooking night in our household!

The smoke detector in our kitchen is overly sensitive.  It literally goes off every single time we cook, regardless of burning or non burning.  To make matters a bit worse, that alarm is wired into the rest of the alarms in the house so the entire house starts beeping!  Adam switched the alarms last night and put a less sensitive alarm in the kitchen and we are really hoping that it helps because this is getting crazy.  This is a bit of a double edged sword too … we just downgraded to a less sensitive alarm that isn’t wired to the rest of the house.  I am not sure that is the right solution but I seriously can’t think of anything else.  In the meantime, I am sure that our security alarm company must think we are nuts or just really bad in the kitchen.  When I explained to her what was happening, she asked if we had fire in the kitchen. Ugh!

Despite all of this, dinner turned out to be pretty good.  I had some spinach that we pretty desperately needed to use so I cooked that as well.

Tilapia, Spinach, and Noodles

Can I just tell you that I am now NOT looking forward to cleaning that pan today!  It make take days of soaking. What is your most exciting experience in the kitchen?
