Healthy Step – Water Revisited

StaircaseWell, last week my healthy step was to drink 64 ounces of water each day.  I have to say that I failed miserably.  I am not sure why water is so hard for me but I really do struggle to drink enough water each day.  In my defense, I do eat lots of fruits and veggies which also contain water but really it is pretty inexcusable.  So, this week… I’ll be trying again.

I did, though, do pretty well with sleep and protein (from a protein perspective, I’m trying to make sure I get some with each meal rather than focusing on a specific number) last week.  And, the extra hour this weekend was amazing… can you guess what I did with my extra hour?  :)  What did you do with yours?

So, here we are in a new week and I am ready to try again do this.  I WILL drink more water this week.  What will you do this week to be healthier?

Healthy Step Update – Protein

StaircaseLast week my healthy step was to increase the amount of protein that I consumed.  My goal was to hit about 80 grams each day.  Well, I am sure that you’ve been sitting on the edge of your chair just waiting for an update… :)  Anyway, I was able to hit the 80 grams per day.  Unfortunately, though, I just wasn’t satisfied with what I ate and I ended up overeating almost every day.  I think that I just didn’t do the proper planning going into the week to make the protein enjoyable.  My lesson here is that I really need to find some more “enjoyable” foods that have protein… I know they are out there.  I just have to find them (and, likely, I have to make them myself)!

I am also very happy to report that I kept up my sleeping habits from week one.  During the week days, last week, I averaged about 7.5 hours per night and then with the big October snow storm here in Jersey… I got somewhere between 11 and 12 hours each day/night.  Boy do I feel good!!  I am ready to start the week running.

Healthy Step – Protein

StaircaseI don’t know about you; but, I’ve been reading and seeing more about protein recently.  Protein is important for our bodies because it is a part of every cell in the human body and helps our muscles build during and recover after workouts.  Protein is a macronutrient (meaning we need lots of it) that unfortunately, our bodies don’t store which means that we only have what we consume.  Anyway, last week, there was an interesting article by Science Daily about protein.  The study found that people on a diet that contained 10% protein consumed 12% more than their counterparts on a 15% protein diet.

This study got me thinking about my own diet and made me wonder how much protein I was eating… the way I figure it, I probably need at least about 80 grams (using this online calculator) a day.  Now, I have NO idea how much protein I am currently eating because I’ve never actually tracked it… So, my healthy step for this week is to not only track the amount of protein I am eating each day but also to try and get in an average of 80 grams each day.

What’s your healthy step for the week?
